Sound
In this section I will be critically assessing sound in reference to my three research films. I will define sound and then explain the different types and what that means. I will then consider the conventions of sound under the particular style of poetic realism. Afterwards, I will discuss if my three research films consist of the conventions or deviate from them.
Sound is everything that can be heard within the shot. It works on both temporal and spacial levels. There are two types of sound, diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic means sound that is actually occurring within the scene and can be heard by both the characters and audience. It results in the scene being temporally and spatially linked. On the other hand, non-diegetic, is sound that can only be heard by the audience. There is no temporal or spacial link to the scene. As a way of maintaining the realistic style, generally poetic realism consists of diegetic sound. Some non-diegetic may be used, but as a way of transition or a notification of time passing. Mostly, if there is non-diegetic sound, it occurs after it has previously been diegetic and is now used as a bridge between two scenes. |
This youtube video contains part of the soundtrack for 'Ivan's Childhood', directed by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov. Right at the start of the film there is use of non-diegetic sound. It alludes to a sense of serenity and while the sounds themselves do not suggest danger or build up any sense of anticipation. However, the pace of the music increases and does imply an essence of excitement.

'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'
|
This youtube video contains the theme song for the film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', composed by Jon Brion. This clip of non-diegtic sound implies a sense of progression and continuation. The use of a drone underneath the top layer of the melody highlights the sense that this is never ending. Having it repeat as well connects the music to the idea that Joel and Clementine's relationship is inevitable and will happen no matter what.

This youtube video contains the soundtrack to the short film 'Memory' by Andrei Tarkovsky, composed by Eduard Artemyev. The music acts as a constant reminder that the character is not alone. While, the mise-en-scene suggest the area, known as 'the zone' is deserted, the music maintains a sense of mystery and danger. Using an echoing technique on the soundtrack implies a sense of this sense of being endangered never ends.

My film, 'Minnie'I intend on utilising a track which does not necessarily suggest any particular emotions. However, I would like a combination of piano and synthisised strings to assist in the portrayal of an enigma.
I will use the soundtrack 'A Glacier' by Peter Broderick. It is composed of a piano and synthesised strings. The piano acts like a drone in a sense that the pattern it plays is continuous and only progresses slightly. The strings increase in volume and build up a sense of anticipation. |
