There are four 'codes' that are used to illustrate meaning to the audience.
Moving images are essentially comprised of four parts. These parts communicate messages to the audience. Mise-en-scene, sound, editing and cinematography are those four crucial parts.

- Technical Codes: How the combination of visual and audio codes create meaning for the audience.
- Linguistic Codes: What the combination of visual and audio codes are communicating.
