Question 2 of Evaluation

Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Across this page I will aim to illustrate how I have effectively combined my main media product and the ancillary texts. I will do this by critically assessing if the mix of my five-minute film - being my main media product - and my posters and articles, being the ancillary texts, are a successful combination. The assessment will include analysing the genre conventions of poetic realism and how it should be conveyed through my main product and ancillary texts.
In the case of my film, it comes under the genre of poetic realism. Poetic realism derived from a film movement that occurred in France during the 1930s. The typical conventions of poetic realism include; stylised, studio bound, utilising a narrative that involves the protagonist having a life of disappointment, receiving one last chance to change through love, then concluding in disillusionment or death. The protagonist is also portrayed as an outcast against society, supporting the minority. A film under the genre of poetic realism usually recreates a reality. It is typical within the genre to see the film having a fatalistic view with the protagonist generally living on the margins of society, as an outcast. The protagonist, prior to the films the beginning, would have experienced a life of disappointment and the film will usually explore the one last chance the protagonist has of love. There is also a typical convention of a heightened aestheticism - which is the emphasis of artistic beauty.
Typically within the genre of poetic realism, Roland Barthes' theory is prominent. Roland Barthes was interested in the negotiated ideology and the communication between audience and institution. Barthes proposed the idea that the reader forms a brand new idea meaning when reading a text, therefore drawing on previous experiences as well as the text itself. The cultural context of consumption of the text becomes just as important as the context itself. Barthes described it as ‘networks’ that closely relate to current texts within multimedia. One of Barthes' main, well known codes is the 'enigma code'. The enigma code is one that establishes a mystery for the audience, which will be resolved through the narrative.
Out of the three production companies that are involved in 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', I believe that 'Anonymous Content' would be best suited to distributing my film. Although all three of the establishments are American and therefore are not known to produce an independent British film, 'Anonymous Content' is an independent company in itself, it is known primarily for producing advertisements However, I think because its small scale and has produced an acute amount of feature films, it would be an appropriate company to distribute my own five minute film.
The intention of my films posters was to overall provide the audience with a sense of character, genre and enigma. I produced two film posters. The first poster is be aimed at a national audience and the other, international. For the national poster, I conveyed my chosen genre - poetic realism - as the main attraction. I combined the ideas of memory and nature in a single image as away of illustrating the genre. Then for the international poster, I portrayed the character as an area of attraction. Poetic realism is not a widely known genre, and for that reason, I have the international poster focused more on the character still, however, giving a sense of an enigma.
In my opinion the posters I created did indeed advertise my film in the way I had intended. The poster I crafted targeted at a national audience includes the protagonist isolated through focus and separated from the space. In doing this I created a sense of an enigma I also had the natural light in the image coming towards the character, representing the protagonist's search for memory throughout the film.
My second film poster, engineered for the purpose of an international audience includes a close up of the protagonist's face. I was able to manipulate the light so that half her face is in light and half is in dark - this provided the audience with an essence of an enigma. I saturated the image to make it more sincere and mysterious.
The aim for my film article was to outline a description of what my film is about. I created one film poster that was targeted and designed specifically for a 'Sight and Sound' audience. I wanted to display images that would present a range of moments in my film and all three locations. As I am focusing on a 'Sight and Sound' layout, I wanted the text to be the principal aspect of the article that is illustrated with images.
I do believe that the article I formed does advertise my film in the intended way. It expresses the representations in my film and some purposeful attributes that I wanted to get across. The article also contained all the relevant information to attract a potential audience without exposing the enigma.
Overall I do feel that the combination of my main media product and the ancillary texts is successful. The ancillary texts, being my two film posters and film article, were able to advertise different aspects of my main product (five-minute film) and clearly display through visuals and linguistics that my film is under the genre of poetic realism.
