Question 4 of Evaluation
March 2013
Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In this section my aim is to explain how I utilised different media technologies in the construction of my media product and also in the research, planning and evaluation processes. I will do this by defining the term media technologies and I will explain how I utilised them during the stages of; construction, research, planning and evaluative.
The word 'media' simply defines as a means of communication, and the term 'technologies' generally refers to a physical object that has been engineered for a specific role. In reference to this, the technologies will include cameras, computer editing software and website building software.
So that I was able to record all of my research, development, my productions and my evaluation, I set up a blog using the Weebly software. Within the research stages of my media product I used search engine Google and thereafter many web addresses to source information for my three research films: ‘Ivan’s Childhood’, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ and ‘Memory’. I used YouTube as a way of viewing the clips I needed to analyse the media language, narrative, ideology, representation and genre aspects of the film. From all the information I gathered, I used it to create my own media products. The main one being my five-minute film, there are also film posters and articles as side tasks.
In the development section of my media product, I used computer programmes to craft my work and document the progress of my own film, posters and articles. In creating my five-minute film I had to construct both narrative and visual developments to present my ideas. The narrative segregated into: logline and synopsis, treatment and screenplay. To illustrate these I used the programme Microsoft Word. The visual developments also sub-divide into: shot plan, storyboard and shot list. I again used Microsoft Word along with PowerPoint and a Lumix Panasonic camera to capture the images I wanted for my storyboard. Again, for the development of my two posters I used the software Photoshop to present a test poster and a mock up of each poster.
During the physical construction of my five-minute film I used two cameras; Cannon 600D and a Lumix Panasonic. When using the Lumix all the shots were handheld to produce a more point of view feel, however, the shots with the Cannon were static and so I utilised a Safari Tripod to keep the camera steady. For the editing section of the construction I used the computer programme Final Cut Express. Using the Lumix became problematic as the files were not compatible with this particular software and so I used the converting software Wonderware to change them from MTS. files to MOV. files. Once I had found the soundtrack I wanted to overlay onto my film, I used the YouTube Converter to download the song and place it in Final Cut.
When crafting my two film posters I used the Lumix Panasonic to capture the images I wanted for my poster I then edited them in programme Photoshop. I used the search engine Google Images to download any images of film festivals and the certificate for my film poster. Then when composing my film article I solely used Microsoft Word.
Finally to complete my evaluation I initially utilised the software Microsoft Word to write out every question. Then to move them into different formats, I used PowerPoint, the Prezi software and YouTube.
